Before a freeze
Protect exposed pipes
Provide insulation for pipes located in drafty or unheated spots like garages or attics.
Let faucets drip
During freezes lasting one to two days, allow faucets to run at a slow trickle to maintain water movement.
Open cabinet doors
Underneath sinks on exterior walls, open cabinet doors so warm air can reach the plumbing.
Outdoor faucets and hoses
Turn off external faucets, disconnect garden hoses, and drain automatic sprinkler systems.
Know your shutoff
Ensure all residents know the location of the main water valve and that it is unobstructed; if the property valve is unavailable or broken, use the City valve in the meter box.
Keep the heat on
If you are traveling, adjust your thermostat to at least 65 degrees and turn the water off at the meter.
If a pipe freezes or bursts
If a pipe bursts
If a leak is discovered, shut the water off at the valve right away.
Before you warm a frozen pipe
Open a tap close to the icy area to let steam exit while heating.
When to call a plumber
Reach out to a professional plumber or your property manager if the provided instructions fail.
If no water comes out
A frozen meter or pipe might be the cause if water flow is minimal or nonexistent.
- Do not use any open flames.
